Job Description:
Job Description Job Description Job Description: The Boston
Globe is seeking a smart and dynamic reporter to cover retail and
the consumer economy. This is a big, fun job. We’re looking for
someone who can bring readers under the hood at brand-name local
companies from Dunkin and CVS to New Balance and T.J. Maxx, someone
who will be plugged in to Boston’s diverse restaurant scene and
stay on top of local supermarket drama (we’ll explain later),
someone who can chronicle the evolution of both brick-and-mortar
retail and the on-demand economy, someone who will regularly break
news on some of New England’s most prominent institutions. On top
of that, we need a reporter who can step back and do smart stories
about how we consume now, about how the internet and AI are
changing our habits and how the high cost of, well, everything is
impacting our communities and culture. You’d be doing this at one
of the biggest regional newspapers in the country, as part of a
robust Business staff that emphasizes stories about how the economy
affects the lives of everyday New Englanders. We are creative and
collaborative, ambitious and enterprising. If that sounds like you,
we’d love to meet. Responsibilities: Conceive, report and write
stories about retail and the consumer economy for both digital and
print platforms of The Boston Globe. Track and own coverage of
major public and private companies, develop sources across
retail-oriented industries and be able to spot and illuminate
trends. Be able to execute stories that range from quick-hit online
news to long-form enterprise, and be willing to pivot between the
two. Collaborate with fellow reporters in Business, Metro, Express
and Food, as well as colleagues in Audience, Photo, Video, Audio
and Data Visualization to tell stories across platforms and reach
the widest audience possible. Qualifications: At least three years
of professional experience at a daily or real-time news
organization. Experience covering business, retail or the economy
is a plus but not required. A digital-first mindset and a
willingness to tell stories across a variety of media. A
collaborative spirit and a good sense of humor are non-negotiable.
Foreign language skills are not a requirement, but if you have
them, please say so. A willingness to adapt and be audience
focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an
inclusive work environment The BGMP office is located in downtown
Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily
accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based
in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to
move. The hourly rate for this role is $38.41 - $61.53. This
position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining
agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild. It is unlawful in
Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a
condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who
violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil
liability. EEO Statement: At Boston Globe Media, our mission is to
empower, connect, and convene our communities with independent,
trusted journalism and storytelling. We know a critical part of
achieving this is by having a workforce that is representative of
the communities we serve. Boston Globe Media is an equal
opportunity employer that welcomes candidates and colleagues of all
backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and skills.
